A large wildfire burns in Canada's Alberta province near Fort McMurray, one of the largest oil-producing areas in the world. This image, taken by the Suomi NPP satellite, uses visible and thermal imagery to distinguish cloud, smoke, land, and areas of active fires. The thermal signature is so strong in this fire that it is easily detected by the satellite's VIIRS sensor, 512 miles up in space.
